Life is filled with mysteries and for my first post on the subject I will discuss The Dogon tribe from Mali. People of the Dogon tribe in Mali live miles from any other civilized city, other than the famous Timbuktu. Despite their isolation, this tribe had been in posession of astronomical knowledge that was, for hundreds of years, far in advance of Western understanding. Two French anthropologists, Dr. Marcel Griale and Dr. Germaine Dieterien, reached the tribe in 1931 and studied them for thirty years, eventually earning their trust. They were entrusted with the secret tribal lore of the Dogon, which included some fascinating information. Long before Galileo made his discoveries in Europe, the Dogon had knowledge of the rings of Saturn, the four major moons of Jupiter and they knew that the Earth is a planet and that all planets orbit the sun. But what was most amazing was their extensive understanding of the Sirius binary star system, which was unknown to the West until 1862 when it was spotted from the world's most powerful telescope. The Dogon knew that Sirius was comprised of two stars: Sirius A and Sirius B. Sirius A, a bright star we refer to as the Dog Star, was to the Dogon the most important star in the sky, as they believed that it was here that life had originated. According to tribal lore, they were given this information by a race of extraterrestrials calling themselves the Nommo, who originated from the Sirius star system. Legend tells how the Nommo arrived on a space ship accompanied by fire and thunder. These aliens were terrifying in their appearance, being fish-like, and according to tribal lore, released huge quantities of water on the Earth in which to live. The Dogon referred to Sirius B as the Nommo Star, and also spoke of a mystical third star, Sirius C, which to date has not been discovered by modern science. The tribe called this star the Sun of Women, and predicted that it would reapper in the sky when the Nommo once again reappear on Earth.
